We decided that since the Temple was closed in Vernal we would take another route home. We went north to Manila and then on into Wyoming. Our last stop was to visit the Fort Bridger Historic Site. It is operated by the State of Wyoming and is very well done. Although the Mormons owned the trading post for much of the 1850's there is very little mentioned or saved from that time period. Their brochure simply states, "It proved to be one of the main hubs of westward expansion used by mountain men and Indians to emigrants and Mormon pioneers, the U.S. army, the Pony Express, the Overland Stage and the Union Pacific Railroad. There is the remnant of a "Mormon Wall" and that is really the only mention as you tour the spot.
The Army bought it from the Mormons and it was interesting to see the Officers houses that were built and lived in just before the original part of our home was built. It helped to put a time frame a bit.
The first people to own the trading post were the Carters and this is one of her dresses and their library. They were very well positioned for this barren area. Would you like to figure out a way to get a bath in that tub?
