April 8 Big Island Hilo

Our goal from Hilo was to see Volcano National Park.  We rented our car and took off that direction.  We drove through a more populated area of town and the smaller towns in the outskirts and then arrived at the park in about 35 miles.  We were able to get right in with our Golden Eagle pass.  It was quite amazing to realize that we were standing on top of an active volcano which sometimes still spews hot lava.  Steam was coming coming up from the caldera and at spots along the road. The Kileuea volcano is relatively small but the most active volcano currently.

We walked through a lava tube.  I thought that this was a cute picture of Camille and Kent, the couple we traveled with.  The last picture is of an interesting plant that was along the pathway there.

We had lunch at an not-so-good place in Kilauea and then visited Rainbow Falls and the Boiling Pots which were right in the town before going back to the ship.
